Learning to
spell the fun way
Phonics Alive! 3,The Speller version 1 is an Australian produced
computer-based program, teaching spelling.
WHO WILL BENEFIT?
Inclusion of The Speller within most school based literacy programs
should enhance the spelling skills of just about every student regardless
of age!
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Phonics Alive! 3, The Speller teaches students to plan how to spell new
and unfamiliar words. Traditional Spelling Rules are explained and actively
taught, followed by practice activities. Sight Words are taught and practice
games ensure that learning is fun. To best suit individual needs, students
are able to choose from a variety of sight words (general lists, community
signs, science words, mathematics words, secondary words or compound words).
A wide variety of additional words are provided with sound files enabling
teachers to add custom word lists to the program.
Students will advance their understanding of the grapho-phonic
nature of our language and of the complicated alphabetic mapping system
of English. The program consists of 15 modules. It is self paced and sequentional.
The starting age of the program is 8 or grade 3.
Phonics Alive! 3, The Speller continues the tradition
of excellence in offering fun learning through a high quality teacher
resource. The student is again offered a technology based, highly interactive
environment through which they are actively taught. It is a student centered
approach, anticipating errors and stimulating interest through visual
puns, broad humour, animation and sound effects.
STUDENT
PERFORMANCE RESULTS
The program follows a student's progress throughout each module and a
record of achievement can be viewed whilst in the program, or can be printed
for later analysis.
TEACHERS
GUIDE
Each School Version includes a 175 page Teachers Guide which is presented
in a 3 ring binder. This guide contains black line masters outlining lessons
and assignments based on the 15 modules. Spelling rules are clearly identified
for the lessons contained in each module. The inclusion of these guides
will enhance the teacher's ability to guide the student through the program,
understand their student's weaknesses and strengths in spelling and help
teachers brush up on their own understanding of the complicated rules
of spelling.
THE
MAIN MENU
Pointing the mouse at a book number in the 'Cavern' will highlight it.
The numbers represent modules. Clicking on this number will take the user
directly to the module required. Once a module is selected, a dialogue
box will appear asking if the user wishes to record the student results.
TASK
LIST
The Task List gives the user the ability to proceed directly to a particular
task anywhere within the program.
THE
CERTIFICATE
Once they have completed a module the student has the ability to print
a certificate. The certificate displays a percentage mark calculated on
the number of times that the student chose the correct response on the
first attempt. Esmeralda, our colourful and helpful friend, together with
her faithful raven and the gargoyle letters, offer further onscreen help
to the student! Look out for her amazing antics, especially in the motorised
broom race!

| *1 We do not recommend running any of our programs under Windows NT 4.0 due to sound and video driver issues which can be difficult resolve. Windows NT 4.0 can certainly be used as a file server for our programs in a multiuser environment such as a school. |
| *2 MacOS X Classic environment is currently used to run the programs. |
